Oklahoma Biographical Index

The Oklahoma Biographical Index was originally compiled by longtime Muskogee Public Library volunteer Helen Lemley and revised August, 2023 (A-Z Index) by MCGS volunteers. It is a valuable searchable and alphabetical index to biographies of more than 15,000 Oklahomans that can be found in 27 books in the Muskogee Public Library. Many of these books may be out of print or difficult to find anywhere else and many of them are not indexed. Some of these books are now out of copyright, available as online ebooks, or for sale as reprints. However, they are all available in the MPL library's Local History and Genealogy Department (as of July 2023) and the index will help you find them. NOTE: many individuals are listed more than once in the A-Z Index, which indicates their biography will be in more than one book.

In case you want to search in a particular book, we have prepared additional indexes by extracting the entries for each of them. We are also using ChatGPT to extract all the entries of women's names in order to create an exclusive index of Oklahoma women. That index will be online soon.

When using the A - Z Index, be sure to also open/download the Book Codes in order to learn the title, author, publisher, and Muskogee Public Library's call number for the book in which your are interested. The individual book indexes include the title, author, and call number as well. If you are unable to find a copy of the book, please submit a Research Request from our Research Services page so we can provide you with a digital copy of the biography you select. Be sure to include the entire index entry in your request.
